Biotage® Horizon 3100 Oil & Grease Extractor

The purpose of this application note is to provide an in-line extraction and drying solution for measuring hexane extractable material (HEM) using solid-phase extraction. The extracts are dried in-line during extraction using ISOLUTE® Sodium Sulfate Drying Cartridges. Using the Speed-Vap®, the extracts are then concentrated with gentle heat and consistent air flow, and HEM concentration is determined gravimetrically.

US EPA Method 1664 for Hexane Extractable Material (HEM) or Oil and Grease has allowed use of solid phase extraction (SPE) instead of liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) with hexane since 2007 and this has been widely adopted in the US. SPE is an equivalent extraction technique to LLE and produces the same n-hexane extract. The extract, similar to LLE, may contain residual water that must be treated properly and removed from the n-hexane extract.

Oil & Grease standards come in pre-measured Teflon tubes of 10 mL each. Each tube contains 20 mg of n-Hexadecane and Stearic Acid for a total concentration of 40 mg. Care must be taken upon the introduction of the spiking solution to the sample bottle.
